Usage[edit | edit source]

Despite being noticeably costlier, Battleships do not have much greater firepower than Rockets; rather, they differentiate themselves from Rockets with their greater attack range and much higher durability. Like all indirect combat units, Battleships can be used as powerful area denial and control tools. Their mobility is limited to the water, which serves as a double-edged sword. While they can more easily avoid direct land attacks, they are also more vulnerable to naval threats and cannot traverse land.

Even with their impressive durability, Battleships are still immensely vulnerable to Submarines and air units. While they can potentially shoot down unsubmerged Submarines, given the chance, they are still helpless against the latter. Because of this, Cruisers are most commonly used as escorts for Battleships. The main flaw of Battleships is their sheer cost, not only for the unit itself, but also to maintain its safety. Any unit that can deal significant damage to a Battleship is virtually guaranteed to be a cost effective trade.

In Days of Ruin, Battleships received a drastic overhaul: they gain the distinction of being the only indirect unit capable of moving and firing on the same turn. To compensate for this, their firepower and attack range have been reduced. However, their actual threat range has only been improved. Battleships also benefit from the changes made to naval units in general, as they can now move under Bridges and across Shoals. Besides these changes, the general strengths and weaknesses of Battleships remain relatively identical. Their price has been lowered slightly, but they are still a costly investment.

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • The Orange Star Battleship is based on the USS Iowa class battleship.
  • The Yellow Comet Battleship is based on the Japanese Yamato class battleship.
  • The Green Earth Battleship is based on the German Bismarck class battleship.
