Kanbei is a Commanding Officer enlisted in the Yellow Comet army. He is the emperor of Yellow Comet and the leader of its forces in Advance Wars and Advance Wars 2: Black Hole Rising. Sensei taught him everything he knows about battling. His boldness and inability to use technology are often contrasted with his daughter Sonja's shyness and technical ability for comic relief.

In Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp, he presents a gunbai in his CO Power animation.

Role

In Advance Wars

In the original Advance Wars, Kanbei rushes off to stop Orange Star as soon as they enter Yellow Comet. He is defeated three times before Sonja explains that Orange Star was merely passing through, and attacked because he attacked them. In the final battle, if Kanbei is present, he declares that Sturm has committed an "unforgivable sin" for capturing Sonja.

In Advance Wars: Dual Strike

Kanbei makes no formal appearance in Dual Strike. However, he is cloned and sent to fight against the Allied Nations during the Omega Land war. Upon completion of the final mission, he is available for use in the Hard Campaign.

Personality

Kanbei is a bold and honorable individual who adheres to the samurai way of the warrior. He is willing to fight to protect his subjects, regardless of any consequences to himself. However, he is also at times airheaded and sometimes incompetent at the basics of combat, such as when he vowed to "deploy a mountain of troops" from a useless base on an isolated island.

Relationships

Kanbei cares for his daughter in an extremely protective manner, often to the chagrin of Sonja. He refuses to expose her to any potential danger, preferring her to stay away from the battlefield. Kanbei only relents after heavy insistence from either Sonja or Sensei.

• Day-to-Day (D2D): Kanbei's units cost 120%, but have 130% firepower and defense.

• CO Power: Morale Boost — Kanbei's firepower becomes 150% and defense 130(+10)%.
• Super CO Power: Samurai Spirit — Kanbei's firepower becomes 150% and defense 150(+10)%. In addition, his counterattacks are 1.5x stronger.

Trivia

• In the Japanese version of Advance Wars, Kanbei has some significant visual alterations. He dons a full set of samurai armor and sports a traditional samurai hair tail.
• In the unreleased iQue prototype of Advance Wars originally developed for the Chinese market, Kanbei's appearance was significantly altered to resemble less like an Imperial Japanese officer; his facial hair and katana were removed and his uniform was changed. Kanbei's Imperial Forces were also renamed to Kanbei's Special Forces. In the western version of the game Kanbei believes he is a modern samurai, while in the Chinese version he likens himself to a modern Zhang Fei. These changes were likely done by Nintendo to avoid any connotations with Japan's invasion of China during World War II.
• According to the Nintendo DREAM strategy guide for Game Boy Wars Advance 1+2, Kanbei is 36 years old.
