The Nintendo Power cartridge writing service (not to be confused with the unrelated Nintendo Power magazine), introduced in 1997, was the original distribution method for obtaining Super Famicom Wars, an additional method for buying Game Boy Wars about nine years after its original release, and an alternative method for buying Game Boy Wars TURBO.

The Nintendo Power service, which was only available for Japan, would involve players paying a portion of a game's standard retail price to download it in specific Japanese stores (such as Lawson via the Loppi system) on to an official white, blank flash-RAM cartridge, known as either a Game Boy Memory Cartridge or a Super Famicom Memory Cassette. There were many games available for the service, including a small number of download exclusives like Super Famicom Wars, Balloon Fight GB, Hajimari no Mori, and the Japanese version of Super Mario Bros. Deluxe.

Some of these cartridges were also available prewritten inside a box with a sticker for the game and the game's manual (the game Balloon Fight GB included a promotional badge pin gift as well).

On August 31, 2001 the service was partially terminated, and blank Nintendo Power cartridges had to be sent directly to Nintendo for them to write new games to them. On February 28, 2007 the service was terminated fully.
