Hello

I just joined myself, noticing I could help this wiki with some templates and such, but you seem to be much more experienced with Mediawiki/template syntax than I am. It would be nice if you would comment on what I wrote on the Community Portal. Also, the CampaignPrevNext template looks great! :) ~FireFly tc 10:47, 17 June 2010 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Thanks, I really don't consider myself experienced, but I've been contributing to Bulbapedia [1] for almost a year now, so I guess practice makes perfect! Luckily, it's not really all that difficult to learn (at least for me), the best way is to find code or a template you think you can use, and try to modify it to suit your needs. But thank you for the compliment on my first template! =] — KC 10:58, 17 June 2010 (UTC)Reply[reply]
You're welcome! Also, would be great if you could alter Template:Unitlist/entry so that {{{first}}} set to "yes" makes the unit name bold, and leaving out unit type doesn't create a wikilink, but just a plain '—'. I'll watch how you do it, and hopefully learn from it! ~FireFly tc 13:18, 17 June 2010 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Do you know if it's possible for administrators to move image file pages? Or should I continue to reupload wrongly named images, and ask an admin to remove the old ones? I really think it's a good idea to be able to get the small sprite picture out of just the unit name, so you don't have to supply both unit name and image file name. ~FireFly tc 20:18, 17 June 2010 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I would assume they can. Actually, if we have all the images in a standard format, it would be a lot easier to code. If all file extensions ended in ".png", for example, we wouldn't have to worry about the possibility of a ".jpg" image popping up. That way, we could set it up with {{{unitname}}} for the actual name listing, and [[Image:{{{unitname}}}.png]] for the image. Like Neotank and Neotank.png, for example. — KC 20:27, 17 June 2010 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Yeah, that was my goal. I tried to keep the Image:{{{unitname}}}-small.png pattern for the small sprites, with that in mind. Hey, I didn't know bold tags did <nowiki> automagically! By the way, just noticed this page links to "User talk:KCorp4000" somewhere, presumably in the box to the right. You may want to modify that. :) ~FireFly tc 20:33, 17 June 2010 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Not a bad idea, but do we need the "small" part of it? I only ask because I don't think we'll really have any "large" images to worry about...? Never mind, if we manage to get images of the Battalion Wars units on here, I guess those would be the "large" group. Thanks, it was the little HP bar. I thought I changed all of those KCorp4000s... That's my username on Bulbapedia. — KC 21:17, 17 June 2010 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I was thinking of Image:Anti-Airs2.png et al., though I guess it applies to Battalion Wars as well. ~FireFly tc 21:37, 17 June 2010 (UTC)Reply[reply]

(resetting indent)
I hadn't thought about that... It would be great if we could get the small overworld sprites as well as those in-battle sprites for each of the Advance Wars countries. That way, there's a little more eye candy to work with. — KC 21:41, 17 June 2010 (UTC)Reply[reply]

True, but I'll leave that for another day. But yes, that's a good goal! ~FireFly tc 21:45, 17 June 2010 (UTC)Reply[reply]
That's exactly right. Look at Bulbapedia, 5 years old and still not complete. Of course, it doesn't help that there's always new info, haha. — KC 21:46, 17 June 2010 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Xylvania

Great job with the Xylvania article! I'm really impressed! ~FireFly tc 10:56, 20 June 2010 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Haha, thanks! Glad I finished when I did - my net connection was really hit-or-miss yesterday. =( — KC 18:03, 21 June 2010 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Unitlist templates

Hi! I just got back from a holiday; forgot to write about it here, sorry about that. Now the extra line breaks shouldn't appear any more. It happens because of an extra newline after the </nowiki> ending tag; see this diff. —FireFly~ 19:31, 2 July 2010 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Wondered if you were coming back! =P Thanks so much for fixing that again, I had no clue what was making it do that. I had kept trying to work the "short" option into the unitlist stuff, but I couldn't get it to work right. It was starting to drive me a little crazy, so I split it into "entry" and "shortentry", at least for now. Somebody can always go back and combine them again. Anyway, it seems that people are focusing on updating the Main Page right now, so if you've got any suggestions, add to the forums! — KC 14:50, 3 July 2010 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Congrats on your adminship!

I'd just like to say congratulations, and good luck, in your adminship! Any questions, don't hesitate to get in touch with me - remember, best way would be via PM on the forum! -- JoJo 10:36, 6 August 2010 (PDT)

Congratulations! :) Moydow 11:45, 6 August 2010 (PDT)
Congratulations. Turtwig A 15:23, 6 August 2010 (PDT)

Thanks everybody! =) — KC 22:52, 6 August 2010 (PDT)

I realize I'm late on the congrating :p But congrats anyway! You're certainly capable of doing the job. If you ever need help on something wiki specific, hit me up! I'm available in NIWA's forum, skype, msn, and the usual talk pages/pm boxes. Oh and don't forget your main page overhaul. I can't wait to see it up!Axiomist 23:35, 6 August 2010 (PDT)
Thanks! If I ever need your help, I'll track you down somewhere. =P I'm just about to switch up the Main Page now, actually. — KC 23:40, 6 August 2010 (PDT)
Awesome! And great timing bc if we get the announcement in through our network, we can bring some traffic to Wars Wiki, and hopefully members! I'll announce it at WK and see if ZW would report as well.Axiomist 23:48, 6 August 2010 (PDT)
It's up! =D That would be great, thanks. — KC 23:51, 6 August 2010 (PDT)
Oh one reason, we thrive in private chats is to share SEO tips, although the wiki is more than Advance Wars, the Alexa rank and Google rank benefit from "-whatever- Wiki" as the main landing page, since "Main Page" is probably not searched outside of Moydow's test :D When people looking for a wiki on it, they won't know the name and will plug "X wiki" into the search engine. Axiomist 00:08, 7 August 2010 (PDT)
Hadn't thought of that. I put the same template on Advance Wars Wiki, at least for now. Can't think anymore, I'm going to bed. =P — KC 00:13, 7 August 2010 (PDT)
Wow, congratulations! I'm sure you'll do a great job as an administrator for the Wars Wiki! I'll see if I can find time to work on some articles when school has started. Once again, congrats! :) —FireFly~ 16:45, 15 August 2010 (BST)

Template request

Hey! Since you do some pretty awesome templates job (yay for roundy), I was wondering if you could make a template sort of like this one since I sort of wanna do this for the Starting units section of Dark Ambition (and, eventually, all AW campaign missions). Unless, of course, you have a better way to go about this. I just figured that normal tables aren't really the best way to display this kind of information. What do you think? Dany36 01:54, 11 August 2010 (BST)

No prob! Check Template:Unitlist/header for the header, and links to the entry and footer templates. They not all finished yet, but that's what I'd like to be using. — KC 02:02, 11 August 2010 (BST)
Alright! I'll finish uploading all of the sprites tonight and see what I can do. Thanks! Dany36 02:25, 11 August 2010 (BST)
Great, thanks. =) — KC 02:28, 11 August 2010 (BST)

New Affiliate/Ally =)

Hey KC, just to let you know we have a new ally in Lylat Wiki- see my Talk page for information. Could you update accordingly? Cheers! ~JoJo 22:32, 12 August 2010 (BST)

That's great! Done and done. =] — KC 08:02, 13 August 2010 (BST)

Suggestions

Hey KC! It seems that JoJo is away more often than not so I'm going to speak to you about this instead.

I have several suggestions of stuff that could be done only by admins/bureaucrats so could you do all that you think are good ideas?

  1. Any admin can add different extensions to Special:Interwiki - I think you should add an extension for all the different wikis that you are affiliated with (i.e. Mariowiki = http://mariowiki.com/$1).
  2. This is a bot attack. That's when a bot continuously makes accounts and spams with them. To prevent that, promote yourself to check user using Special:Userrights and then use the function Special:Checkuser on one of the accounts. After that you will get an IP address, go to Special:Block and instead of typing a name, type the IP address and it will block that user and all accounts that they make in the future.

I had a third but it flew out of my mind. Once again, these are suggestions, not orders though I think they are good ideas, it's up to you and JoJo in the end. Yours truly, Warguy1.

Thanks for the suggestions, help is always appreciated! I had thought about the interwiki stuff, but like a lot of other things I'd like to do here, it got bumped to the back burner when school started up again. I've actually got more wiki work done today than I have in a while. If I can figure that all out, I'll get it done. As for Checkuser, I don't currently have the authority to access Special:UserRights, unfortunately. I'll have to talk to JoJo about that.  ;) — KC 21:27, 25 September 2010 (BST)
Oh, I see, may I suggest you talk to JoJo about creating a rank called "Owner" for herself and then making you a bureaucrat? It's a great way to allow bureaucrats onto the wiki while not allowing them to take over.--Warguy1 05:17, 26 September 2010 (BST)
The new title wouldn't be needed, but is a good idea for whenever Wars Wiki gets bigger and needs more staff. When I get back in town, I can send JoJo a message explaining how we set WiKirby up so that Admins can promote/demote people to/from autopatrol, patroller, checkuser, and admin, but only bureaucrats add bureaucrats and remove bureaucrats. It's pretty simple and straightforward, using (true) beside the user rights in the LocalSettings.php. Axiomist 13:26, 27 September 2010 (BST)
Further to the bot attack issue, please note the dates- July 2009. Since then there have been bot prevention measures installed, and in the year past that, I think I have weeded out only one, maybe two bots/spammers. Compare this to the WC forums getting them signing up on average 2-4 per week... which is better than when we would get 12-16 per week. ~JoJo 14:39, 2 October 2010 (BST)

Seeing as it's the only one on either NIWA template that doesn't have a logo, you could either use this, which I uploaded earlier, or I can upload the favicon in 200px PNG format instead. Moydow 18:34, 15 October 2010 (BST)

It would be great if they had an image that doesn't use any text. The icons on the NIWA templates only show up as 15px, so any writing doesn't look good. I was going to add that image to the Main Page's NIWA template, but when I hit Preview, the "Wiki" part is barely discernible, and "Strategy" is almost totally see-through. — KC 18:43, 15 October 2010 (BST)
Well, I'll add it for the time being. It doesn't look right without that ninth image. — KC 18:50, 15 October 2010 (BST)
Is this any better? It's the best I can get, but feel free to delete it if it doesn't look right. To be honest, a non-text icon is unlikely. Moydow 20:16, 15 October 2010 (BST)
Actually, I think the first one's the best. I blew that one up so the text was just readable enough, then I did the same to the other icons so it didn't look out of place. I didn't think there was a non-text logo, but the NIWA templates don't look bad this way. — KC 22:07, 15 October 2010 (BST)

Proposal?

Hi, I'm Cmario17 - a user that just joined from the Mariowiki. I only own the orignial Advance Wars, but I think I can contribute. I think it would be a good idea to have the links go directly to their suggested page, not the disambiguation page. This sounds confusing (even to myself), so I'll give an example: On the page for the game Advance Wars, a list of the units is displayed. Bomber and Infantry both lead to disambiguation pages (those are the only two I checked), and the page, "Bomber (Advance Wars)" doesn't even seem to exist! We should direct the "Bomber" and "Infantry" links on the Advance Wars page to "Bomber (Advance Wars)" and "Infantry (Advance Wars)"- which are not to be confused with the Batallion Wars games.
Just a suggestion. I didn't know where else to ask.
Cmario17 20:17, 1 March 2011 (GMT)

Hello. Thanks for pointing that out; help is always appreciated. The templates and images used in the games' unit lists need to be reworked in order to link directly to the appropriate page. If the links were correct, than the images wouldn't appear. I'll get things fixed up shortly. — KC 14:30, 3 March 2011 (GMT)

Dealing With Spam

Is there any chance I could entrust you with updating the MediaWiki:Spam-blacklist whenever there is a need to? There's not much to it, I'll give you an example.

Let's take the last spammer to post a URL...

http://www.toptopdir.com
1. Remove the prefixes -- topdir.com
2. add \b to the start and end of the domain - it essentially acts like a wildcard for both the start and end of the domain name
-- \btopdir.com\b

Also, where you know you have a spammer account, feel free to use the Merge and Delete tool to cut out the high number of spam accounts we seem to be accumulating.

I'd do all of this, but I'm running out of time to do such things, with so much uni work on my plate. Would you be okay to do this when you do your routine blocking? ~JoJo 11:24, 3 April 2011 (BST)

Sure, I don't mind. I would have done more than just delete/block, but I wasn't sure about the regex stuff. If that's all there is to it, I can handle it. Good luck with school.  :) — KC 16:56, 3 April 2011 (BST)
Yuppers! Regex for the MediaWiki:TitleBlackList is more complex, but I have no idea about most of it so have been following the style you see in there, though we have to be careful that we don't block innocuous pages - for instance, I blacklisted "Meds", which blocked all MeduaWiki pages. Thanks, though! ~JoJo 20:45, 3 April 2011 (BST)

Internal Errors with your page

BTW, every time I edit your page I receive an internal error - this is due to overloading the server with the requests, and I have found that overuse of templates is responsible. If you remove, or reduce the number of templates being called, it'll stop this and I'd appreciate it - I don't want to be told to go to a private server. :x ~JoJo 20:49, 3 April 2011 (BST)

Thanks for the heads-up. I just tried to check the Recent Changes and got the same thing (more than once). I'm in class now, but I'll go through it later. — KC 15:10, 4 April 2011 (BST)

New article

How can I make a new article? I've been trying to fill info for DoR. --Vommack 23:53, 8 August 2011 (BST)

It's easy. All you need to do is take the root address of any page and add the new article's name to the end. The address of the Main Page, for example, is http://warswiki.org/w/Main_Page. You would simply drop the Main_Page part from the end, add the new article's name in its place, and hit Enter. Thanks for helping out. — KC 16:10, 9 August 2011 (BST)
By the way, you might want to have someone look at the pages for Shipyards Ablaze/Operation Reprimando, there are two enemy nations in both of them and it's linking to an nonexistent page instead of their respective pages.--Vommack 17:58, 9 August 2011 (BST)
You might want to edit CObox for Battalion Wars a bit too; Colonel Austin and Major Betty are supposedly married in one of the online maps for BW2...think Ubel and Ingrid aren't, but you never know...--Vommack 23:31, 12 August 2011 (BST)

NIWA New Members

Hey! I'm Starphoria of Starfy Wiki. There are a few new wikis joining NIWA in the future, and F-Zero Wiki joined the day of me leaving this message. If you could start to update everything here at Wars Wiki as each new wiki joins, NIWA would be extremely grateful. :) --Starphoria 03:12, 17 March 2012 (GMT)

Thanks for the heads-up. I'll work on getting things updated shortly. — KC 18:57, 19 March 2012 (GMT)
No problem, and thanks :) --Starphoria 19:16, 25 March 2012 (BST)
Hi, a few other things on the NIWA template need updating:
Thanks in advance for fixing these! --Moydow 20:52, 28 March 2012 (BST)
Updated! — KC 04:21, 29 March 2012 (BST)
Just a quick update on this: Wikirby has moved to http://wikirby.us/wiki/Main_Page Tacopill 00:12, 15 August 2013 (BST)
In addition:
--Moydow 03:05, 17 August 2013 (BST)
I can see what I can do as a normal user, though I doubt I can do what needs to be done. --Sgv Sth 04:21, 29 August 2013 (BST)
Updated, and those two accounts are now blocked. Thanks for reverting those edits, Moydow. — KC 05:11, 14 September 2013 (BST)

User:New user message

Just in case you or someone from staff see this, could User:New user message be labeled as a bot? The Recent Changes get too cluttered without an option to switch off any edits made by it. --Sgv Sth 04:21, 29 August 2013 (BST)

I agree, but I have no control over it. It was useful years ago, when the site experienced waves of new, good-faith users and rapid growth, thanks mostly to the affiliation with NIWA. But with so many new spam accounts, it may be best to retire it. — KC 05:11, 14 September 2013 (BST)
Deleted the account as of today. --WikiJoJo WikiJoJo 13:01, 10 November 2013 (GMT)

New NIWA Members

Hi. Since your last update, two new members have been inducted into NIWA: Hard Drop Tetris Wiki and Splatoon Wiki. I'll upload the favicons for you, but I need you to update the templates on the Main Page and the Interwiki Table. Thanks! --Starphoria 16:13, 4 July 2015 (BST)
