Cleanup is the first mission of the Advance Wars 2: Black Hole Rising campaign. In it the player acts as Andy, an Orange Star CO. The mission mostly serves as a tutorial.

This mission is completely absent in Hard Campaign, and is replaced by Sea for All.

Background

Before the mission starts, Andy calls Sami, another veteran Orange Star CO, to ask why Nell, their superior, has called for them. Sami states that the Black Hole army has returned, to which Max responds in utter disbelief. As Andy asks what they are waiting for, Sami mentions they aren't even in Cosmo Land, and goes on to explain about continents; a word Andy seems to not understand. It appears that the Black Hole forces have invaded all the nations of Macro Land. Andy soon rushes off to join the battle.

Flak, the enemy commander, wonders aloud why the Orange Star lines haven't been broken yet. A soldier replies that they are stronger than expected, and mentions that a new Orange Star CO is arriving. Flak shrugs it off, saying that they will have to make do with the units they have.

Nell has defeated most of the Black Hole units by the time Andy arrives, denying him a chance to show-off. Instead, she uses the opportunity to help Andy get back into the swing of combat. She explains the basics of the game's mechanics to Andy while breaking the fourth wall. The player begins in the next turn, at which point Andy comments that they don't seem to be fighting Sturm; Nell agrees, saying the enemy CO just wants to smash things.

After the battle Andy states that it seemed too easy, but Nell says he shouldn't worry, as she thinks they're in for a whole slew of combat.

Trivia

• If the player lets all their units run out of fuel, Nell will scold Andy for slacking off and explains how to restart the mission.
