The Crater of the Sun is a massive crater in the Battalion Wars series, the former location of Lord Ferrok's Iron Tower.

History[edit | edit source]

Located inside Xylvanian borders, the Crater of the Sun is a reminder of the Lightning Wars that occurred centuries ago. Lord Ferrok and his Iron Legion marched against the free nations of the world in a bid of global conquest. Soon, only the Solar Empire was left to stand against him. Imperial Empress Qa-Len ordered her forces deep into Old Xylvania territory, hoping to put an end to the war. However, after two major defeats, Qa-Len was done playing games. Pushed back to the beaches of Old Xylvania, Qa-Len gathered the last of her forces and ordered a strike battalion to attack the Legion's coastal defence Quad Cannons. However, the Iron Lord had re-claimed a Solar-held Airbase nearby, and quickly produced Fighter and Bomber support. The Imperial strike force on the beach was quickly eliminated.

Against all odds, a single Imperial Grunt was able to survive the onslaught. Meeting with a handful of other survivors, they made their way inland. Stumbling across the Staff of Qa-Len, the group was imbued with great power and mighty defence. Reaching the building, the Staff Bearer and the others quickly climbed the tower and activated the staff. This staff sent a signal to an orbiting Imperial satellite, which expanded its solar panels to absorb the sun's rays. Focusing the energy into a single intense beam, the satellite took aim at the location of the signal, locking onto the Iron Tower. In a single, powerful blast, the intense solar energy obliterated the tower, killed Lord Ferrok, and decimated his Iron Legion. The resulting shock wave carved out a massive crater from the earth where the tower once stood, and would come to be known as the Crater of the Sun.

Present Day[edit | edit source]

Centuries later, the present-day Xylvanians had built a monument here, the Cenotaph, which acted as a portal to the netherworld where the vanquished Legion forces resided. Desperate to win the new war, Countess Ingrid steals the Sword of the Kaiser from Kaiser Vlad, and travels to the Cenotaph with Kommandant Ubel. Climbing the monument, she uses the sword to awaken the ancient Iron Legion forces in a foolish attempt to save Xylvania from the Allied counterattack. Allied Solar and Frontier forces were able to destroy the monument, eliminating the Legion's entrance to the present-day, and crushing any hope of victory for Xylvania.
