The Staff of Qa-Len is an ancient doomsday device from the Battalion Wars series.

History[edit | edit source]

200 years ago, Lord Ferrok commanded his Iron Legion of Old Xylvania to march against the free nations of the world in a bid for global conquest. Many nations fell to the supernatural might of the Legion, and soon the Solar Empire was the only one left standing. Mustering her forces, Solar Empress Qa-Len managed to form a naval blockade along the Old Xylvanian shores, forcing the Legion armies back into their borders. She also mobilized legions of Anti-Air Vehicles, Frigates, and Missile Vets to prevent the Iron Lord's massive air force from leaving their borders. Qa-Len's forces were able to slowly push their way into the country, forcing the Legion units to retreat further and further.

After two major defeats that saw the first use of a Battlestation prototype and the massacre at the Mining Saws, the Imperial Empress was done playing games. Gathering her remaining forces, Qa-Len ordered a strike battalion to attack the Legion's coastal defences, the Quad Cannons. However, Lord Ferrok was able to reclaim a Solar-held Airbase nearby, adding Fighter and Bomber support to his forces. Despite their best efforts, Qa-Len's Battleships and Gunships were quickly eliminated.

Against all odds, a single Solar Grunt survived the onslaught at the beach. This lone soldier met up with a handful of other survivors, and stumbling across the Staff of Qa-Len, fought their way to the Iron Tower, Lord Ferrok's personal stronghold. The staff's power granted the Staff Bearer great power as well as great defence, and the soldiers were able to inflict massive damage to Legion units they met on their way. Reaching the tower, the group quickly climbed to the roof, where they activated the staff. The staff sent a signal to the orbiting Imperial satellite, which expanded its solar panels and absorbed the sun's rays. Focusing the energy into a single intense beam, the satellite took aim at the location of the signal, locking onto the Iron Tower. In a single, powerful blast, the intense solar energy obliterated the tower, killed Lord Ferrok, and decimated his Iron Legion. The resulting shock wave carved a massive crater in the earth where the tower once stood, and would come to be known as the Crater of the Sun. With the war over, Qa-Len traveled to a Tundran glacier to dispose of the staff so that it could never be used again.

Centuries later, Lord Ferrok's descendant, Kaiser Vlad, would lure the world to war so that he could search for the staff while the other nations were fighting. After obtaining the critical seismic data from his Ice Station X, Vlad would establish his Mining Spider in the North Tundra wastes. This mechanical menace began drilling into the glacier to reach the staff, but would soon be destroyed by the re-formed Alliance of Nations.
