At the start of the game, Brenner and [[Lin]] rescue [[Will]] from the ruins of the Rubinelle academy as the latter was pursued by [[Bandit Raiders]]. He and Lin served as Will's mentors.

A year after the meteors struck, Brenner reluctantly sides with Admiral [[Greyfield]]'s [[New Rubinelle Army]] to fight against the [[Lazurian Army]], led by General [[Forsythe]]. The 12th Battalion and the NRA defeat the Lazurians at Fort Lazuria, where Forsythe surrenders himself. However, Forsythe is soon ruthlessly executed on Greyfield's orders while the rest of the Lazurians are rounded up to be executed at an NRA internment camp. Feeling distraught, Brenner and the 12th Battalion break the Lazurians out of captivity. Brenner, wounded in the process, stays behind to let the Battalion escape. As Brenner takes cover in an abandoned city, an infuriated Greyfield orders the use of an experimental weapon that completely vaporizes the city, killing Brenner and the pursuing NRA troops.
Brenner sacrificed himself to protect the Legion and the Sapphirus troops.
