With the player controlling either [[Red Star]] or [[Blue Moon]], the two countries fight over the course of fifteen maps. Two additional maps are unlocked following the completion of the "campaign" with either country.

The turn-based gameplay that Intelligent Systems developed for ''Famicom Wars'' is very similar to that found in ''[[Fire Emblem]]''.

The maps found in this game and ''[[Super Famicom Wars]]'' are also found in all the ''Advance Wars'' games, including ''[[Advance Wars: Days of Ruin]]''.

A group of five soldiers from ''Famicom Wars'' appear in the Wii game [[''Captain Rainbow'']], and aspire to win the volleyball gold medal.
