The Lightning Wars was a global conflict waged by the Iron Legion 200 years ago in the Battalion Wars series.
==History== | |||
The conflict began when Lord Ferrok ordered his Iron Legion to march against the free nations of the world. Most countries were forced to submit to the otherworldly power of the Legion. Things were looking grim, but one nation, the Solar Empire, was able to muster their Imperial forces to oppose the Iron Lord.
In the final days of the war, the Solars had gained a lot of ground. Empress Qa-Len had prevented Lord Ferrok's strongest attacks by forming a naval blockade along the Old Xylvania coastline, and deployed many Anti-Air Vehicles, Frigates, and Missile Vets to prevent the Iron Lord's massive air force from leaving the Xylvanian borders. Qa-Len's forces were able to slowly push their way into the country, forcing the Legion units to retreat further and further.
Once the Solar forces had gained a foothold in Iron Legion territory, Qa-Len authorized the use of large solar panels that would recharge her vehicles. Lord Ferrok knew this, and deployed his Battlestation prototype to eliminate the Solar's power supply. Imperial forces tried in vain to destroy it, but this new "terror tank" was more powerful and more sophisticated than any tank or vehicle ever designed. The Iron Lord sent his pride and joy to the solar panels, and was able to destroy them, along with Heavy Tanks and Gunships that were recharging nearby.
Forced to take a step backward, an opportunity presented itself to Qa-Len. She seized a Nerocite mining quarry, which was critical to fuel the Iron Legion's forces. Qa-Len desperately ordered her Imperial units to destroy the Mining Saws, which would eliminate the Legion's fuel-extracting capabilities. Outraged, Lord Ferrok commanded his demonic troops to reclaim the quarry. As hard as she fought, Qa-Len's Imperial forces were no match for the supernatural might of the Legion.
After two major defeats, the Imperial Empress was done playing around. Forced to fall back to the Old Xylvania borders, she mustered every available unit that she had left, specifically Battleships and Gunships, to assault the Iron Lord's Quad Cannons. These two cannons formed much of Lord Ferrok's coastal defences, and destroying them would give the Imperial forces a much-needed victory. However, the Legion forces were able to reclaim a Solar-held Airbase nearby, which allowed Lord Ferrok to manufacture Fighter and Bomber support near the coast. Even with a will of steel, the Imperial forces were all but defeated.
Despite the fact that all seemed to be going well for Lord Ferrok, the tide of war would soon turn against him. Overconfident, he gathered his Legion forces at the Iron Tower, his personal stronghold, in order to resupply his units. Little did he know that a single Solar Grunt was able to survive the onslaught at the beach. This lone soldier met up with a handful of others who had survived the beach assault, and stumbling across the Staff of Qa-Len, made their way to the Iron Tower. Imbued with the staff's power, the new Staff Bearer was able to not only inflict massive damage against the Legion forces they met on their way, but the staff also acted as a shield, minimizing damage taken. Reaching the tower, the group secretly climbed to the roof, where they activated the staff, the Solar doomsday device. The staff sent a signal to an orbiting Solar satellite, which absorbed the sun's rays with its solar panels, and focused them into an intense beam. The satellite took aim at wherever the signal was received from, and so set its sights on the Iron Tower. In a single, powerful blast, the intense solar energy obliterated the Iron Tower, killed Lord Ferrok, and decimated his Iron Legion. The resulting shock wave carved a massive crater in the earth where the tower once stood, and would come to be known as the Crater of the Sun. Those Legion units that were not immediately destroyed would be frozen in stone for the next 200 years, when a desperate Countess Ingrid would unleash them once again.

* The term "Lightning War" is a well-known German phrase, blitzkrieg. This may be a reference to the fact that the Iron Legion's Old Xylvania would, in the present day, resemble Germany.
