Tabs[edit source]

I feel the two layer tabs overload the infobox and make it harder to access the images. Having artwork there gives a nice overview, but comparisons are better served in a gallery. Prod (talk) 15:51, 10 June 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hello. I see, though I based the two-level tabs layout on that implemented on the Zelda Wiki (example). I guess a better implementation can be done if this site has the Scribunto installed and we were to revamp the infoboxes.
For now on the CO pages, I think we can keep the artworks in the infobox and move the sprites to the gallery section.
But for the unit pages, if two-level tabs are discouraged and we should have only one-level tabs on the infobox, should we...
  • Include only the model and classic sprite of the Orange Star version of the unit in the infobox, have everything else in the gallery?
  • Or, include only the models from AWRBC in the infobox, move the classic sprites to gallery?
  • Or, include only the classic sprites from the older games in the infobox, move the RBC models to gallery?
There's also the case of the Days of Ruin sprites to handle, if we want to have those uploaded.
Thanks, JFX (talk) 16:25, 10 June 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Specifically on Zelda I feel 2 layers of tabs is overcomplicated and not as clear for users.
Sounds good for the CO pages. I'm open to suggestions for unit pages. Maybe the most modern image cause they look nicer? Or any composite images that shows a few different ones together? Maybe we stay consistent with only artwork in the infobox? What do you feel is best? Prod (talk) 16:55, 10 June 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
{{Unit Tabs}} looks good! Prod (talk) 21:25, 10 June 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Please try to avoid the use of #ifexist. It's considered an expensive parser function, and if the page doesn't exist, it will show up on Special:Wantedfiles. Prod (talk) 23:26, 20 June 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Extensions[edit source]

I've enabled EmbedVideo. What are you looking to set up with Scribunto? Prod (talk) 01:43, 23 June 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Thanks for that and the patroller rights.
I was considering we should use Scribunto for revamping the infoboxes/navboxes, and I have seen on other wikis that its also used to store in-game data values. So it could be useful for the storing and displaying the AW unit damage chart numbers.
However, such things would take a lot of time to set up and atm I'm more focused on my current Todo list (i.e. uploading images for the BW2 units), so I'm cool if this can be setup at a later time. - JFX (talk) 02:12, 23 June 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
No problem!
For storing data, Cargo might be a better extension to use. Scribunto just makes things much more difficult for regular users. There's often specific things that are impossible to do in wiki markup that would require lua templates, I just don't feel what we do is that complex. Possible helping hand?[edit source]

Seriously, bravo on all the work you've done recently. It's been fantastic to see the developments you're making. I've had a couple of resources stewing on my computer for awhile, and since I've been extremely busy on a few other wikis, I thought I could compile them and hand them off to you instead. They might be of interest, they might be completely useless, who knows. The page can be found here. I'll try to poke my head in a little more often to get stuff done, especially now that Inkipedia work is winding down. If there's anything I can do to help, feel free to ask. To-dos and other thoughts[edit source]

I feel that splitting up the unit and character categories too much make take away from their usefulness. The page on Advance Wars already lists units (perhaps needs sortable for the type) and COs, so having categories give the same information seems redundant. Having the categories show units across games gives a different view than the pages.

Your other todo's sound good. I had set up the {{AW Mission Infobox}} to replace the rest, I just haven't had the chance to update usage.

{{EmbedVideo}} videos seem a bit big. Perhaps 300px would be more appropriate? Most have the option to full screen them once they're playing.

I really like {{Plainlist}}. Many of the fields it's used for seem to always be lists, so it may be easier to integrate it into the infobox templates directly.

What you did with the individual {{Tabs}} templates is really cool. I only put the |tabs parameter in because it was easy. If you feel there's a better way, do feel free.

I feel infobox templates are the best place for automatic categorization rather than the navigation templates. You may use navigation templates on pages that aren't about the thing but you won't usually use an infobox anywhere else. However, I'm not sure the best way to accomplish this with some of the templates that apply to multiple games.

I think it might be interesting to convert the CO/Unit lists to use mediawikiwiki:Extension:Cargo instead. That way it'll auto-generate as long as the infoboxes are properly filled in. If you think it's a good idea, I can look into setting it up.

You can find me on discord (linked in the sidebar) if you'd like to chat about anything. Prod (talk) 06:28, 26 June 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

For the categories I believe there should still be some level of subdivision, at least by game series. I saw there are some categories that contain both pages from AW and BW together. For categorizing character pages, I see its the norm on many other wikis to add categories based on games the character appeared in (e.g. Andy would be in "Advance Wars characters", "Advance Wars 2: Black Hole Rising characters", etc.)
Regarding using infoboxes/navboxes for automatic categorization, I think we should just stick with manually adding categories for each page to prevent confusion.
I guess we can give the Cargo extension a try.
I am already on the ABXY Wiki Discord. I go by HenloBenlo. - JFX (talk) 00:57, 27 June 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

File message[edit source]

Instead of writing your little blurb for uploads (though it should really be source=self), use source=jfx and it will just do that message for you. Trig - 20:30, 28 June 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Understood, though I see that the File template has the user parameter for source so I will stick with that. The source text I originally was using is based on the Source template from the Zelda Wiki. - JFX (talk) 00:29, 29 June 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
