— Flak - |
Flak is a Commanding Officer for Black Hole. He debuted in Advance Wars 2: Black Hole Rising.
In the European release (except in English and Spanish), his name is Helmut.
Role[edit | edit source]
In Advance Wars 2: Black Hole Rising[edit | edit source]
Flak is the main Black Hole CO in charge of invading Orange Star. He is seen mocking and insulting COs, particularly Max (he calls him a gorilla in Orange Dawn).
Afterwards, he also makes a couple of appearances in Blue Moon and Yellow Comet. He does not appear in any Green Earth missions.
In Advance Wars: Dual Strike[edit | edit source]
He does not make any appearances in the campaign, but he can be bought from Hachi for 1,000 points after completing it.
Personality[edit | edit source]
Flak is an unintelligent brute. He doesn't care much for tactics and mostly strives to crush things and cause destruction.
Relationships[edit | edit source]
Flak holds no respect for anyone besides his superiors in the Black Hole army. He frequently trash talks other COs and forms a particularly intense grudge against Max.
The only COs that Flak is shown to be truly intimidated by are Lash and Hawke, but for different reasons. Lash tends to use Flak as a guinea pig for her experiments while the latter's higher rank and superior competence intimidate him.
Skills[edit | edit source]
Flak is a weaker version of Nell, possessing both luck and bad luck, both of which increase by his powers.
In Advance Wars 2: Black Hole Rising[edit | edit source]
- Day-to-Day (D2D): Flak has a luck range of 15 to a bad luck range of 10.
- CO Meter:
- CO Power: Brute Force - Flak's luck range changes to 40 luck and 20 bad luck. (Standard +10% defense.)
- Super CO Power: Barbaric Blow - Flak's luck range changes to 80 luck and 40 bad luck. (Standard +10% defense.)
In Advance Wars: Dual Strike[edit | edit source]
- Day-to-Day (D2D): Flak has a luck range of 25 to a bad luck range of 10.
- CO Meter:
- CO Power: Brute Force - Flak's luck range changes to 50 luck and 20 bad luck. (Standard +10% firepower and defense.)
- Super CO Power: Barbaric Blow - Flak's luck range changes to 90 luck and 40 bad luck. (Standard +10% firepower and defense.)

Competitive Play[edit | edit source]
Unsurprisingly, as a CO designed to be deliberately underpowered, Flak is generally regarded to be among the worst COs for use in any remotely serious battle. Specializing in Luck damage is unreliable in it of itself, but there are two additional factors that further cement Flak's uselessness. He is one of the few COs to have bad Luck which can often undermine his damage output even when his good Luck is high. Additionally, he holds the dubious distinction of having CO Powers which can negatively impact the user. However, none of these can even compare to the fact that Flak is completely outclassed by Nell in nearly every conceivable way; she lacks bad Luck, her good Luck values are higher (with the exception of her maximum Day-to-Day Luck in Dual Strike), and her CO Powers cost just as much as Flak's.
Therefore, it is highly advised not to use Flak in any kind of competitive battle if one's primary goal is to win.
Trivia[edit | edit source]
- Flak is the only Black Hole CO unlocked by default in Advance Wars 2. All of the other Black Hole COs must be purchased for use via the Battle Maps shop.
- Despite Flak's extremely rude behavior towards the Orange Star COs, he sports no negative Tag Affinities with any Allied Nation CO. He shares this distinction with Adder.
- Coincidentally, both COs are never present during the Campaign of Dual Strike.
- In Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp, Flak mentions that he is bald due to one of Lash's previous experiments having gone wrong.
