Overview[edit | edit source]

Cruisers are rather situational units. They are the best response to Submarines, as they can deal massive damage to them while taking very little in return. This makes them ideal escorts for Battleships who are otherwise vulnerable to Submarines. However, their uses are sparing beyond that. Ironically, Cruisers take major damage from all air units in Advance Wars and Advance Wars 2. They also cannot target any other naval units besides Submarines. From Dual Strike onward, both of these issues have been remedied. Cruisers receive much less damage from air units and they are now able to fire upon other ships, albeit with limited damage output.

The ability for Cruisers to garrison up to two Battle Copters or Transport Copters can prove useful in niche situations. This can protect them from enemies such as Fighters when escape is impossible. Additionally, all units aboard the Cruiser will be resupplied at the start of their turn. Like other transport units, if a Cruiser sinks, any units on it will also be lost. Cruisers also sport surprisingly high Vision range for a naval unit, although using Cruisers purely for scouting purposes is not particularly efficient. In Days of Ruin, their Vision range has been increased, now being on par with Submarines.
