Submarine units are direct combat naval units. Their purpose is to attack ships and other submarines. They have appeared in all installments of the Advance Wars series. They have their own defensive type and, prior to Advance Wars: Dual Strike, were the only units to do so. They now share that honor with the Oozium.

Submarines have the ability to dive underwater. While doing so, they consume more fuel but can only be attacked by Cruisers and other submarines.

Overview[edit | edit source]

Due to their limited array of targets, Submarines are not commonly built. However, they are excellent at hunting down Landers and Battleships. Their ability to dive underwater helps grant them safety and stealth while performing their ship hunting duties. Having a Submarine often forces opponents to build a Cruiser in response, being one of the only units capable of attacking submerged Submarines. Regardless of which unit strikes first, Submarines are terrible against Cruisers and should avoid engaging with them if possible.

Submarines are very resistant to most land vehicles and some air units, although this isn't terribly useful. Submarines are also by far the most likely unit to run low on fuel, as they consume high amounts of fuel while submerged. This necessitates keeping APCs or Black Boats nearby to resupply them, lest they sink. Finally, Submarines have the highest Vision range of all naval units, being on par with Recons and Missiles. Combined with their ability to dive, this makes them great for scouting.
